Capacity Building for Small Community Water Systems - Survey of Regional Districts

  • Since the waterborne disease outbreaks in Walkerton, Ontario and North Battleford, Saskatchewan, much public attention has been focused on safe drinking water. Among other initiatives, the Province of BC has responded with the Action Plan for Safe Drinking Water in BC and the Drinking Water Protection Act. The Action Plan describes a number of issues, including the challenges that smaller community water systems have encountered in meeting regulatory requirements and providing potable water in a sustainable manner. The following report summarizes the findings from a survey of regional districts concerning the management of smaller community water systems within their jurisdiction. The objective of the survey was to understand the relationship between small community water systems and regional districts in British Columbia in order to explore options for improving the way small community water systems are managed.
